Our History

Free State Flying Club was established at College Park Airport more than 50 years ago. At some point someone will write a longer history here, but we are currently too busy flying.

about college park (CGS)

College Park Airport is the world's oldest continuously operating airport. Founded in 1909, the airport served as a military flight demonstration site for the Wright Brothers and some of the nation's first military aviators trained from the field. Today, the airport is the closest general aviation airport to Washington, DC and is easily accessible by car or the Washington Metrorail system.

College Park is located within the DC SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area) and FRZ (flight restricted zone). To fly into or out of College Park, pilots must have completed the online SFRA course and applied for and received a FRZ PIN. Flight plans must be filed to depart from or arrive at College Park and there are special procedures for doing so. Pattern work is not permitted at College Park but can be done at Freeway (W00) or other nearby airports.

The College Park Airport site has information on obtaining a PIN to fly to/from CGS.
